Skills = reusable procedures

Hermes skills are on-demand knowledge documents with progressive disclosure — the agent doesn’t load every skill into every prompt. Skills can be agent-managed, improved during use, and shared via the Skills Hub / [agentskills.io](https://agentskills.io)-compatible formats.

Operator practice

Good skill topics: deploy checklist for your stack, “how we triage support tickets”, “blog publish steps”. Bad skill topics: secrets, one-off chat noise, unverified procedures.

Ask Hermes to draft a skill after a successful multi-step task, then edit it yourself. Human curation beats blind accumulation.

Persistent memory

Steer the loop

• Correct wrong memories immediately

What makes a skill worth maintaining

A skill is procedural knowledge the agent loads when relevant — the how of a task, captured once. That only pays off under specific conditions.

Good candidates repeat often, have a stable procedure, and currently require you to re-explain context every time. Weekly reporting with a fixed shape, a client onboarding sequence, a recurring reconciliation — these earn their maintenance cost.

Poor candidates are one-offs, procedures that change every time you run them, or tasks where the hard part is judgment rather than steps. Encoding judgment as procedure produces confident execution of the wrong approach.

Writing skills that hold up

Treat a skill like a runbook for a competent new colleague. State the trigger condition, the inputs it needs, the steps in order, the checks that prove it worked, and what to do when a step fails.

The failure branch is the part people omit and the part that determines whether a skill is safe to run unattended. A skill that only describes the happy path will improvise when reality differs, and improvisation is exactly what you were trying to remove.

Memory hygiene as a practice

Memory degrades in a specific way: it accumulates facts that were true when stored. A former client, a superseded process, a preference you changed. The agent has no way to know these expired, so it keeps applying them with full confidence.

Review periodically with one question per entry — if this shaped an output next month, would that be correct? Remove anything that fails. Prefer storing decisions with their reasoning over storing raw statements, because reasoning lets you judge whether it still applies.

Nudges and the interruption budget

Surfacing relevant memory unprompted is genuinely useful and easy to overdo. An agent that interjects constantly gets ignored, which defeats the point. Tune toward fewer, higher-confidence surfacings; the value is in the one reminder that mattered, not in volume.

SA business application

The highest-value skills in a small South African business are usually the undocumented procedures living in one person's head — how quotes get built, how a supplier dispute is escalated, what has to happen before month-end. Encoding those has value beyond the agent: writing the skill forces the documentation nobody has done.
